Let Google index the page so its AI features can use it
Description
This criterion checks that your page can be indexed by Google and used in AI Overviews and AI Mode: Googlebot is allowed to read it, nothing asks Google not to index it, its canonical points to a valid page and its rendering resources are accessible.
iPand measures what the page allows, not whether it is actually in Google’s index nor whether your brand is linked to the Knowledge Graph: only the site owner can see that, in Search Console.
Why it matters for AI engines
AI Overviews and AI Mode only cite pages that are in Google’s index and whose snippet rules allow it. A single robots.txt line or a noindex tag left behind after a redesign is enough to remove a page from those answers.
- A page blocked for Googlebot or marked noindex cannot be cited by Google’s AI features.
- nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and an overly broad data-nosnippet stop Google from reusing your text in its answers.
- A canonical that points to a broken, redirected or non-indexable page makes Google pick another page than yours.
How to fix it
- 1 Allow Googlebot in robots.txt Open your site’s robots.txt file and remove the Disallow rule that covers the page, in the User-agent: Googlebot group as well as in the * group. Also allow the site’s stylesheets and scripts: without them, Google does not see the page the way your visitors do.
- 2 Remove the directives that block indexing Look for noindex, none or unavailable_after in the <meta name="robots"> tag, in <meta name="googlebot"> and in the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header. These directives are often left over from a staging site or added by a CMS plugin.
- 3 Let Google show a snippet Remove nosnippet and max-snippet:0, and keep the data-nosnippet attribute for passages that really must not be quoted (legal notices, pricing conditions), never for the core of the text.
- 4 Fix the canonical The <link rel="canonical"> tag must point to the page itself or to a page that answers directly, without a redirect or noindex. If the same page is published at several addresses, choose one and point the others to it.
- 5 Check indexing in Search Console In Search Console, use the URL Inspection tool: it shows whether the page is indexed, which canonical Google selected and why a page is excluded. Once fixed, request indexing from the same tool.
Key takeaway
A page that Google can neither read nor index does not exist for AI Overviews and AI Mode. iPand checks every day that the page allows it; confirm that it is in the index from your Search Console.
