Let Bing index the page so Copilot can use it

Authority Updated Oct 4, 2026

Description

This criterion checks that your page can be indexed by Bing and used by Copilot: bingbot is allowed to read it, nothing asks Bing not to index it, and neither noarchive, nocache nor snippet rules limit how Copilot can use it.

iPand measures what the page allows, not whether it is actually in Bing’s index: only the site owner can see that, in Bing Webmaster Tools.

Why it matters for AI engines

Copilot relies on the same crawling and indexing foundation as Bing search. A page that Bing cannot read, or that a directive excludes, cannot be a source for its answers, even if it shows up well in Google.

  • A page blocked for bingbot or marked noindex appears neither in Bing search nor in Copilot answers.
  • noarchive excludes the page from Copilot answers; nocache limits Copilot to the URL, title and snippet.
  • nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and data-nosnippet stop Bing from showing a snippet and may weaken Copilot’s citations.

How to fix it

  1. 1 Allow bingbot in robots.txt Open your site’s robots.txt file and remove the Disallow rule that covers the page, in the User-agent: bingbot group as well as in the * group. If a bingbot group exists, Bing ignores the * group: repeat in it the general rules you want applied to Bing.
  2. 2 Remove the directives that block indexing Look for noindex or none in the <meta name="robots"> tag, in <meta name="bingbot"> and in the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header. These directives are often left over from a staging site or added by a CMS plugin.
  3. 3 Remove noarchive and nocache If Copilot should cite the page, remove noarchive and nocache from its robots tags and from the X-Robots-Tag header. Keep them only on pages whose content you do not want used in Copilot answers.
  4. 4 Let Bing show a snippet Remove nosnippet and max-snippet:0, and keep the data-nosnippet attribute for passages that really must not be quoted (legal notices, pricing conditions), never for the core of the text: iPand flags a data-nosnippet that covers half of the main text or more.
  5. 5 Check indexing in Bing Webmaster Tools Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, then use the URL Inspection tool: it shows whether the page is in Bing’s index and why it is missing. Once fixed, request indexing from the same tool.

Key takeaway

A page that Bing can neither read nor index does not exist for Copilot. iPand checks every day that the page allows it; confirm that it is in the index from Bing Webmaster Tools.
